Yulia and David's April 30- Trunk Bay Ceremony and reception at the Waterfront Bistro, St John USVI

Planning a wedding anywhere can be stressful.   Many times the stress of  the details can overshadow the real purpose of  the day.   A wedding is a celebration of two persons who have made the decision to join their lives together.   The dress, flowers, music, photography and food* are all reflections of who the bride and groom are as a couple.  The real focus, however is the ceremony.  Here the bride and groom make their promises and publicly declare their marriage to each other. Yulia and David were married on April 30, 2010.   I previously blogged about their wedding. http://islandstyleweddings.wordpress.com/2010/05/02/designing-a-tropical-island-destination-wedding/

However, there is much more to their story.

Yulia's  father Alex,  immigrated from the Ukraine  to Chicago 8 yrs ago.  He drove a cab for two years before sending for his lovely wife Tatiana and children, Yulia and Alex.  During those two years, he lived in his car to save money and create a better life for his family in the US.

Yulia finished high school in the US and went on to become a pharmacist attaining her degree in English her adopted 2nd language.

In working with Yulia and David, it was clear that they wanted to celebrate the joining of two families and cultures.  New England Irish and Russian Ukraine!  Quite a combo!!

Two weeks before their wedding date, Yulia' s father was killed in an automobile accident.   Yulia and David decided that they would go ahead with the wedding as this would be what Alex would want for them.

There wedding was a true celebration of the love of family and friends.  Yulia's family continue to inspire me to remember not to sweat the small stuff,  keep the focus on what is important and live every day as it might be your last.

David was a stellar example of what a husband should be in time of sorrow.  He gave her the space to grieve, honored her wishes and supported her through out.

Alex, I know you are watching over your loved ones.  Your spirit continues to live on in each of us who were so deeply touched that day.
